Seminars 1 and 2 will be arranged in weeks 46 – 48. Please check further notices for the schedule.

Please note that Seminars 1 and 2 of 799A01 correspond to Seminars 2 and 3 of TGTU39. You should not do the assignments of TGTU39, since you should not attend Seminars 2 and 3 of TGTU39.

Due to the increased number of students and the limited space, the library seminar should be run with 2 seminar groups at different times. The time schedule is changed to:

The time for library seminar group 1 is Wednesday, 2009-10-07, at 15.15-17.00 in the Science and Technology Library in Building B.

The time for library seminar group 2 is Wednesday, 2009-10-07, at 17.15-19.00 in the Science and Technology Library in Building B.

Please find your name from the following lists of the groups and attend the seminar for your group.

2009-09-10

For the students who missed some or all lectures and seminars:

You should try to attend the lectures of TGTU39. You can find more information and the schedule of the lectures from the website:

www.ida.liu.se\~TGTU39 . If the scheduled lectures of TGTU39 are clashed with your other courses, you should try to solve the problem by yourself. The requirement is that you should attend at least 3 lectures. Please remember to put your programme name, name, person number and signature on the attendance list when you attend a lecture. Please note that you don’t need to register for TGTU39, because you are registered for 799A01.

 

I will arrange a library seminar in weeks 40-41 and 2 academic writing seminars (seminar 1 and seminar 2) in weeks 46-47 for you. Please send an email to me (qin-zhong.ye@liu.se) to register for the 3 seminars (or the ones you missed) before September 18, 2009. Please put “799A01 seminars” as your email subject and indicate your programme name, person number and which seminars you want to attend in your email. I will try to arrange the seminars to avoid clashes with your other courses. The requirement is that you should attend all 3 seminars and hand in 2 assignments. Please check the schedule for the seminars on this website before week 40 and week 46.

Please note that the library seminar time for group 2 and group 3 has been changed due to a conflict in the schedule. The new time of library seminar for group 2 is Tuesday (2009-08-25), 10.15-12.00.  The new time of library seminar for group 3 is Tuesday (2009-08-25), 13.15-15.00.

If you are an international master student of Faculty of Arts and Sciences registered in 2008 and have missed some lectures and seminars of 799A01 in 2008, you should try to attend the lectures and seminars of 799A01 in 2009. The course begins on August 17, 2009. Please see the schedule  Schedule_799A01_2009.pdf.

Please add your name into the attendance list, mark “2008” beside your name and sign your signature when you attend a lecture or a seminar.

Number of credit points: 3

Scheduled lecture time: 12 hours (6 lectures)

Scheduled seminar time: 6 hours (3 seminars)

Recommended self-study time: 45 hours

Aim:

The aim of this course is to prepare the students for academic studies on a high level and also to let the students learn the academic culture in general. A basic ambition is to supply essential tools to the students on the master’s level in Sweden. The course should facilitate the transition from the consumption of science to the production of science. After the course, the students should:

  • obtain some basic knowledge on how to write a technical/scientific report,
  • be able to critically review a technical/scientific report,
  • understand the basic rules and regulations for advanced study at Swedish universities.

Contents of the course:

  • Student-centered learning and academic culture
  • University rules, organization and ethical rules
  • Anti-discrimination and equal opportunities
  • Academic writing
  • Review of scientific work, constructive criticism
  • Rules on citation and reference
  • Researching library resources 

Course organization:

The course has scheduled 6 lectures and 3 seminars. The 3 seminars (2 academic writing seminars and 1 library seminar) are held in smaller groups (about 20 to 30 participants in each seminar group). There are assignments for the academic writing seminars (Seminars 1 and 2).

 

Course requirement:

The students are required to attend at least 4 lectures and all 3 seminars.
