The instructions for what to do in assignment 2 (review) are on a slide in Academic writing II (See the notice on 2008-11-03), while the guidelines for how to do a review are given in Academic writing III (see the notice on 2008-11-06).

The same submission procedure as for assignment 1 applies for no. 2.

2008-10-21: For students who missed the library seminar of TGTU39 or 799A01

One extra library seminar is arranged in week 45, Tuesday 4th November, 13.15 PM. It is still in the seminar room at the TekNat library in the B-building. The students who wish to attend have to send an e-mail to Mr Charlie Järpvall (chaja@bibl.liu.se), who will be the teacher at this occasion, to confirm that they wish to attend. We still have a maximum of 20 students for this occasion.

Aim:

The aim of this course is to prepare the students for academic studies on a high level and also to let the students learn the academic culture in general. A basic ambition is to supply essential tools to the students on the master’s level in Sweden. The course should facilitate the transition from the consumption of science to the production of science. After the course, the students should:

  • obtain some basic knowledge on how to write a technical/scientific report,
  • be able to critically review a technical/scientific report,
  • understand the basic rules and regulations for advanced study at Swedish universities.

  • Introduction to LiU
  • Academic writing
  • Review of scientific work, constructive criticism
  • Rules on citation and reference
  • University rules, organization and ethical rules
  • Student-centered learning and academic culture
  • Anti-discrimination and equal opportunities
  • Researching library resources 

Course organization:

The course has scheduled 6 lectures and 3 seminars. The 3 seminars (2 academic writing seminars and 1 library seminar) are held in smaller groups (about 20 participants in each seminar). There are assignments for the academic writing seminars (Seminars 1 and 2).

Course requirement:

The students are required to attend at least 4 lectures and all 3 seminars.

Time schedules:

Due to the large number of international master students and different schedules in different faculties, the course will be run twice in autumn of 2008. The first run is scheduled in weeks 34 and 35 for the international master students in Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The second run is scheduled in weeks 38-41 (Period 1) and weeks 44-48 (Period 2) for the international master students in the Institute of Technology and Faculty of Health Sciences. Students, who have missed the first run for some reasons, can take the second run. The detailed schedules can be found in the following files:
